A Month Out: Turning 25

August 6th, 2010

Note: I’ve been a bit reflective this week because I was fighting a little cold but also because I’m on a mission to lose some weight. That mission has been totally set back by said cold, but I guess that’s how these things go, right? Right. Both are reasons why I’ve been writing a little less recently but I do have a lot of topics still to cover. Don’t you worry, they’ll get written. It’s just taking some time to get everything to sync the way I want it to. Anyway, back to my original topic of this post. Birthday wine.

Earlier this year, I stated that I wanted to drink wine from my birth year on my birthday. Turns out, I drank some on my half birthday back in March at the hands of a very generous friend (Thank you, thank you, thank you, Adam). Now, being a month out from my actual birthday, I’ve come to this bummer of a realization. I can’t afford to buy anything from 1985 to drink on my birthday.

Sad. True. Disappointing. Yeah, it’s kind of all of those, but not really. I put up that original post shortly after the renaming and redesign of this blog, and at that point, could never have imagined the doors that this writing would open for me. Since then, I’ve gone to two wine regions, met a ton of amazing people, and yes, I’ve even tried two wines from my birth year.

Even though it might be slightly disappointing to realize that 1985 wine on my actual birthday won’t happen, it’s still okay. I have a birthday every year and no matter how old I turn, a birth year wine will still be special.

Don't worry about the birth year, but why not drink something you've always wanted to try within reason? Or get a few different wines that cost your age ($25, as you probably figured out), and find out which one is your favorite? Or taste 25 different wines…

    You've got options, kid!

I'm kind of thinking that all I want to do is have a quiet dinner with my boyfriend. Hoopla is fun and all but sometimes, it's nice to just spend some quality time. (This is me after a very introspective week, though, so this could change. We'll see. I'll figure out something good.)

quiet dinner, and hoopla. no need to limit the celebration to one event.

Good point. Maybe hoopla and then quiet dinner. After all, it is my last big birthday for 5 years.

Birth year wine will definitely always be special! It gives you celebrating to look forward to.
Hope you feel better. I used to try to push myself to run when I am sick, and it is just not worth it. Let yourself be fully sick, get better, and you will be more than ready to get back at it. Otherwise you might end up dragging for way longer than you need to!

Thanks, Meghan. I actually recovered pretty fast, so I'm thankful for that. I'll get back in the saddle next week with running and hopefully I haven't lost too much ground in the mean time. I appreciate the little tips you've given me, too. A lot of the time, I have no idea what I'm doing so I appreciate the guidance.

Check out http://www.winebid.com/buy_wine/search_results…. Don't know what your price range is, though. Plus, I doubt you can get these wines within the next couple weeks. But, perhaps you could use it for 26!

Thanks, Sam. The extra unfortunate part is that most vendors won't ship to my state (Massachusetts) so it's hard to find something good, in my price range, and that I can actually get. I think I'm just going to set the goal for some birth year craziness on my 26th birthday.
